The resident, who used to work as an accountant, was rushed to King's Mill Hospital in an ambulance following the incident.
His 59-year-old son Jeff Smith is asking why the incident, which took place on May 5, was not brought to the attention of police until nine days after he sustained the injuries.
He said: "I couldn't believe it when the manager phoned to say Dad had been attacked.

"We went to the hospital and found him in a terrible state, it was awful to see Dad in such a state.
"He was black and blue, his face was a mess, his hands, arms and body were covered in bruises and his ear had curled up like a cricket ball."
The shocking news came just as Jeff's daughter Emma had given birth to the care home resident's first granddaughter.

Jeff, a former salesman, said: "I'd just got back from the hospital and I was so proud but this just spoiled everything.
"I am appalled that something so serious could happen to a vulnerable old man like my dad at a care home that is supposed to be looking after him."
Since the incident, the family have met with Social services and Age UK who were shocked at Jeff's story.
Cyril has now moved to a different care home in Mansfield.
Jeff added: "Social services told us the home should have contacted them and the police should have been informed straight away.

"As soon as he was well enough we moved him to Bailey House - it's been like upgrading from a B&B to a 5 star hotel. The treatment has been so much better.
"Parkside even sent us a bill for £22 for the taxi which took my dad to the hospital for a follow up treatment on his ear."
A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said: "We are currently investigating an alleged assault on an 86-year-old man at the Parkside Home in Mansfield on 5 May.
"At this time our enquiries are continuing."
